Grateful and Gathered: Get Organized for Thanksgiving

The December holiday season often gets blamed for stress and overwhelm, but for many of us, it actually begins in November with Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving. Whether you’re hosting a crowd or setting a cozy table for a few, being organized helps you enjoy the day instead of dreading it.

Start by focusing on the public spaces where guests will gather — the kitchen, living room, and bathroom. This isn’t deep cleaning yet; that can wait until just before the big day. Right now, it’s about decluttering — removing anything that doesn’t belong. The sooner you do it, the less likely you’ll be tempted to shove things into a drawer or closet later.

Do a quick “sweep” to tackle paper piles and everyday clutter. Recycle what’s outdated (old newspapers, catalogs, flyers). File what you need to keep (bank, insurance, or medical paperwork). Act on the few items that need immediate attention (bills or RSVPs). Move books, clothes, and personal items back where they belong, and resist the urge to pile things on surfaces — put them away, not down.

Finally, clear the entryway and front closet. Donate coats, jackets, or accessories that no longer fit or aren’t needed. You’ll make space for guests and create a welcoming first impression. With a little effort now, you’ll enjoy a smoother, calmer Thanksgiving focused on gratitude and connection — not chaos.

Happy Thanksgiving!
