What’s BAD about getting organized?

You’ve decided to make some changes to your home or office organization. You’re sick of the status quo and want to make some improvements.  It’s easy to answer why it’s GOOD to get organized – more room, less stuff, feeling in control of your time and your space.  So why doesn’t that motivate us to get organized?

Try asking another question – what’s BAD about getting organized?  Imagine your basement is messy – hard to believe, I know, but just pretend.  Imagine it’s annoying to fight your way through old sports equipment, stacks of magazines and holiday ornaments to get to what you really want and better use the space. But somehow you can never motivate yourself to clean it and you’re feeling worse and worse about yourself whenever you think about your “failure”.

So ask yourself – what would be BAD about organizing this space?  This job will be boring, time consuming and a lot of work.  Okay, but when you really think about it – is there something else at stake?  For instance, do you think it’s important to be thrifty and save things like you were taught as a child?  Does throwing out items feel wasteful or disloyal to the giver?  Or maybe you have to get rid of things that remind you of the past, when you were younger or your kids were younger.  In essence, you need to decide which memories are worth keeping and which aren’t – that’s the hard task and decision making you’d rather put off for another day, not the task of organizing the basement….
