What items in your transitional space help keep you safe?

Entering and exiting the home easily and with less stress is a goal for everyone. One of the best ways to simplify daily routines is by creating an effective transitional space — sometimes called a “launching and landing pad.” This is the area where the essentials live: keys, bags, shoes, backpacks, and all the items we need to grab quickly on the way out the door.

But there’s another category of items that deserves a permanent home in this space — the items that help keep you and your family safe.

Think sunscreen and bug spray.

The reality is simple: if these products are difficult to access, we are far less likely to use them consistently. But when they are visible, organized, and easy to grab, applying sunscreen or bug spray becomes part of the routine instead of an afterthought.

As we head into summer and spend more time outdoors, sun and skin safety become even more important. We know the risks associated with overexposure to the sun, and we’re also increasingly aware of mosquito- and tick-borne illnesses. Organizing these products near the door creates an easy reminder before heading outside.

A simple basket, closed bin, drawer, or cabinet in your mudroom, entryway, garage transition space, or kitchen can work perfectly for storing:

• Hats and sunglasses
• Cooling towels
• Refillable water bottles

Closed storage is especially helpful for keeping products contained, reducing clutter, and keeping items away from little hands. It’s also important to store sunscreen and bug spray out of direct sunlight and extreme heat to help extend their effectiveness and shelf life.
